Safe Mushroom Foraging Program

Program Information

A morel mushroom, which is heavily pitted and approximately 3 inches tall, is sprouting from leaf litter.
Common Morel Mushroom (Morchella americana) found during the spring season in Webster County, Iowa.

The Safe Mushroom Foraging Program was developed to inform Iowan's who are interested in learning more about mushrooms and foraging safety. The program is led by Natural Resources Field Specialist, Gina Buelow, and discusses what fungi are, the basics of mushroom identification, and tips on foraging safely and responsibly.

The presentation heavily references the Safe Mushroom Foraging field guide and encourages the use of science-based resources to identify mushrooms and determine edibility.

Different versions of the program are offered seasonally, with a focus on morel mushrooms in the spring and other species highlighted in the fall. The Iowa mushroom calendar developed by ISU Extension and Outreach is a great resource to know what to look for throughout the year.

Program Types

As of 2025, the Safe Mushroom Foraging Program is delivered as a 1-hour long presentation or as a 3-hour long field day.

Safe Mushroom Foraging Presentations are offered in a classroom-style setting and feature specimens to view as available.

Safe Mushroom Foraging Field Days include a presentation in the field, an identification practice session, and time to explore a natural area to find specimens.
