On-Farm Timber Harvest: 5 Considerations Before the Saws Start

Iowans sell between 20 and 35 million dollars of standing timber from their woodlands each year. The value-added products resulting from this material, in-turn, support approximately 5 billion dollars in annual regional economic output (Flickinger et al., 2020) – not too bad considering woodlands represent 8% of Iowa’s landscape! The 2023 Iowa Farm and Rural Life Poll (IFRLP) reports that 42% of farmers surveyed had harvested timber from their properties at some point during their ownership, however, only 28% of respondents utilized a professional forester during the process (this is important to note – stay tuned)...
