The Iowa Learning Farms webinar on Wednesday, Feb. 17, will highlight research being done on the nutrient retention capacity of newly restored wetlands in Ontario, Canada. Wetlands have been identified as natural infrastructure to help protect downstream water quality. However, wetland drainage has resulted in widespread loss of wetlands across the rural working landscape of southwestern Ontario, Canada. Due to similarities in landscape and land use, the challenges faced in the rural working lands of Ontario reflect challenges here in Iowa, said Hilary Pierce, extension outreach specialist with Iowa Learning Farms. The nutrient retention capacity of restored wetlands in similar regions can be useful for better understanding the capabilities of wetlands closer to home.
