Soil and water conservation practices and the 2024 fall crop market outlook will be covered during this field day north of Tripoli on Saturday morning, August 17th. It will be held on the Tom Manson farm, 1614 Larrabee Ave, along US Hwy 63, one mile north of the Tripoli exit. This free event is sponsored jointly by Bremer County SWCD and Iowa State University Extension and Outreach-Bremer County, with registration beginning at 9:30am and the program will begin at 10am. A free noon meal is also provided at the end of the program. Attendees will enjoy the inside air-conditioned facility on a typical hot August day.
Featured guest speaker is Dr. Chad Hart, Ag Extension and Outreach Extension Farm Economist, who will be sharing his 2024 Crop Market Outlook. To highlight key cost-share conservation practices available to area farmers and landowners, Tyler Midden from the Waverly NRCS office will discuss programs available to invest in coil and water conservation efforts.
The Manson farm was the first in Bremer County to install a denitrifying bioreactor in August 2014. Its purpose is to reduce the amount of tile water nitrates entering into nearby Crane Creek. This is its 10th year anniversary and tests have shown it has been reducing tile water nitrates by over 70%, thus protecting stream water quality. These tests and reports on county stream water quality tests will be shared by Bremer County ISU Extension Program Coordinator Ron Lenth.
In addition, educational booth by conservation and commodity groups will be on display. Also, those attending have an opportunity to learn more about the Iowa DNR stream roadside signage program you notice on county highways. For further information, contact Ron Lenth at the Bremer County Extension office at 319-882-4275, or rlenth@iastate.edu.
